Urban Studies Team

Urban Studies Team is the youngest unit of the Institute of Polish Culture and was set up by the council of Faculty of Polish studies in June 2011 at the request of Roch Sulima, together with dr Igor Piotrowski and dr Włodzimierz Pessel. It responded to the need of cultural researches to pay attention to issues raised by other social and humanities disciplines. The idea of the Team of Urban Studies itself had grown spontaneously from the cross-disciplinary symposia cycle “Humanistyczne perspektywy badania miasta” [Urban Research Perspectives within the Humanities] organised from 2009, which resulted in plenty of publications in journals and popular magazines.

Measurable increase of social and academic interests in municipal problems, city planning, urbanism and local cities` tradition is crucial process, in which the Team inclines to participate, and is liable to discuss it systematically as well. Permanent members of the team come from three units of the Institute (lecturers and graduate students); they are followed by employees from other departments and external collaborators. In the study, referring to written materials forms the predominant feature of Team`s approach, however this resource is extended to the entire spectrum of semantic measures, that appear in contemporary culture.

Recently, the works of the Team focused on the realisation of the research grant „Topo-Grafie”; prof. Agnieszka Karpowicz and Piotr Kubkowski as a secretary presided over them. The main result of this research was a series of edited volumes devoted to the role of Warsaw and other cities, in Poland and all over the world, in creativity and life of a couple of especially urban-inclined writers (Miron Białoszewski, Leopold Tyrmand, Marek Hłasko, Tadeusz Konwicki). The publisher of the books is “Lampa i Iskra Boża”.

Additionally, the Urban Studies Team is responsible for conducting of the “Urban culture” specialization for MA students.
