Włodzimierz Karol Pessel – Assistant Proefessor, co-founder and supervisor of the Urban Studies Team. In 2009–2013 served as the General Secretary of the Polish Association of Cultural Studies. His research topics include nordic studies (issues of the Danish affluent society and Polish-Scandinavian international relations), city cultures (in particular, the topic of sanitation in Warsaw) and cultural sociology.
He is the author of the award-winnning Antropologia nieczystości. Studia z kultury sanitarnej Warszawy [Anthropology of Waste. A Study of Warsaw’s Sanitary Culture] (2010) and co-editor of numerous volumes, including Islandia. Wprowadzenie do wiedzy o społeczeństwie i kulturze [Iceland. An Introduction to Society and Culture] (2009) and the Topo-Grafie [Topo-Graphy] series: Tętno pod tynkiem. Warszawa Mirona Białoszewskiego [A Pulse Beating under the Plaster. Miron Białoszewski’s Warsaw] (2013); Ceglane ciało, gorący oddech. Warszawa Leopolda Tyrmanda [A Brick Body, A Hot Breath. Lepopld Tyrmand’s Warsaw] (2015). He has contributed articles to “Acta Sueco-Polonica,” “Teksty Drugie,” “Kwartalnik Historyczny,” “Przegląd Kulturoznawczy,” “Kultura Współczesna.”
He is currently the recipient of a National Science Center grant, conducting research in Denmark. He also cooperates with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in the Common Baltic Program.
