This presentation draws on a collection of 350 postcards showing « women in men’s jobs » at the turn of the twentieth century. Three hundred of the postcards are from France, and 50 are from other European countries. I will first explain how this collection came into being and offer some thoughts on the link between gender history, the history of work, and visual culture. I will then discuss how visual sources can contribute to our understanding of the feminization of work, as well as their limitations. Finally, I propose to compare and contrast the socio-political phenomenon of women’s access to historically male professions (first women lawyers, doctors, drivers…) and the visual phenomenon of these women’s appearance in urban public space and then in images disseminated to a wide audience.
