The researchers from the section examine numerous issues, including anthropology of performance, cultural poetics of theatre, history of theatre of the19th and 20th century and media theories of theatre and performance.
We are interested in cultural performances, such as ceremonies, sport competitions, carnivals, protests as well as theatre, dance and performance art. In our understanding, all these cultural performances reestablish the myth of a united society and legitimize its structural changes – they are the essence of social life in its intensity and essence of culture as such (in its dynamic, intense form of festivity). In this context, the researchers from the Section treat theatre and art as an important metasocial commentary, a story that every society tells about itself. The cultural poetics of theatre tries to identify and trace the connections between various forms of theatrical practice and collective experience and to investigate relations between social life and theatre.
By tracing the phenomena of contemporary and past theatre, broadening the understanding of theatre to include the diverse field of social spectacles and artistic performances, we reconstruct the history of bodies. We study theatre and performances as a space for the representation of various forms of embodiment, subjectivity and identity, as a space for establishing and renegotiating the cultural categories of norm and non-normativity.
