Anthropology of the Word Section

The Anthropology of the Word Section studies language as a cultural phenomenon. We view language as existing in an inseparable relationship with its speakers, taking into account the properties of various media and their non-communicative functions. Various “ways of using words” are considered primarily in terms of cultural practices. Research conducted in the Section encompasses both theoretical foundations of this understanding of anthropology of the word and analyses and interpretations of specific linguistic phenomena.

In collaborative and individual work, we examine, amongst others, the functions of various media (especially writing and print, including the issue of “literate/textual inclination”); the relationships of words with other cultural media (including the phenomenon of logovisuality); institutional media practices; and the forms, genres, and practices of verbal creativity are addressed from a theoretical and historical perspective.
