Katarzyna Łatała is a doctoral candidate in Cultural Studies at the University of Warsaw and in European Ethnology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In her research, she focuses on the period of state socialism as seen through the lens of the present day. She has conducted extensive fieldwork with the oldest allotment gardeners in Nowa Huta, Kraków. Retired steelworkers act as her epistemic partners, teaching her about their cosmoeconomic, ecological, and existential experiences, practices and theories. She is interested in recovering alternative memories of state socialism, as well as peasant and working-class knowledge and culture, in order to learn about community economies and ecologies. She is from Nowa Huta and comes from a family of allotment gardeners. She has received grants from the National Science Centre of Poland, Schroubek Fonds Östliches Europa, and the Excellence Initiative of the University of Warsaw.
