Filmologist and culturologist. Professor at the Section for Film and Visual Culture. Head of the research group for the study of film. He is the founder of a scientific school of film studies that focuses on the original method of anthropological-morphological analysis of the film work. His research areas include auteur cinema, analysis and interpretation of the film work (with particular emphasis on the anthropological perspective), the history of Polish cinema, and cinematography.

Author of the monographs: Zagubieni w drodze. Film fabularny jako obraz doświadczenia wewnętrznego [The Feature Film as an Image of the Inner Experience of a Character, 1999], Księga filmów Andrieja Tarkowskiego [The Book of Films by Andrei Tarkovsky, 2012],  Wyprawa bohatera w polskim filmie fabularnym [The Hero’s Journey in a Polish Feature Film, 2014], Antoni Krauze. Filmy fabularne, filmy dokumentalne [Antoni Krauze. Feature Films, Documentaries, 2021], Tarkowski. Encyklopedia [Tarkovsky. Encyclopaedia, 2023]. Author of the book of interviews “Każdy mój film był inny”. Rozmowy z Witoldem Sobocińskim [“Every Film of Mine Was Different”. Talking to Witold Sobociński, 2022]. 

Together with Lidija Rezoničnik he has written Mojstrovine poljske književnosti in filma: “Faraon”, “Svatba”, “Mati Ivana Angelska” (2021) and Masterpieces of Polish Literature and Film. “Pharaoh”, “The Wedding”, “Mother Joan of the Angels” (2023). 

Originator and academic editor of the series Monographs of Masterpieces of Polish Cinema.

 Editor of the monographs: Antropologia postaci w dziele filmowym [The Anthropology of a Character in Film, 2015], “Faraon”. Poetyka filmu [“Pharaoh”. The Poetics of the Film, 2016], Doświadczenie wewnętrzne bohatera w dziele filmowym [The Inner Experience of a Hero in Film, 2017],  “Wesele”. Filmowa mandala [“The Wedding”. A Film Mandala, 2022] and editor of the book  “Faraon”. Rozmowy o filmie [“Pharaoh”. Conversations About the Film, 2017].

He is the translator and author of books by Andrei Tarkovsky: The Tolstoy Complex (Kompleks Tołstoja, 1989) and Sculpting in Time (Czas utrwalony, 1991 and 2007) as well as the first full international edition of Tarkovsky’s Diaries and Screenplays (Dzienniki and Scenariusze, 1998). 

He is the editor of Jerzy Wójcik’s books:  Labirynt światła [The Labirynth of Light, 2006] and Sztuka filmowa [Film Art, 2017] and the creator of the online studies film project Edukacja Spojrzenia [Education of the Look].
