mgr Antonina Gugała

Graduate of the Institute of Creative Photography (MA, Silesian University, Czech Rep.), Department of Psychology (MA, University of Warsaw) as well as, the Institute of Iberian and Ibero-American Studies (BA, University of Warsaw). PhD Student at the Doctoral School of Humanities at the University of Warsaw, discipline: Culture and Religion Studies. Photography is a central topic in both her research and artistic practice. Her PhD research is focused on the relationship between professional photography and the institution of motherhood and she is developing her thesis under the supervision of professor Justyna Wierzchowska (Institute of English Studies, Department of North American Cultures and Literatures) and professor Iwona Kurz (Institute of Polish Culture, Section of Film and Visual Culture). 

 

As a researcher-on-demand she has collaborated with numerous cultural agents across Poland, Switzerland and the US. In 2022, she debuted as a curator and organized the exhibition “Celina Osiecka. Photography Services” (Praga Museum of Warsaw), followed by a book publication under the same title (Museum of Warsaw, 2022). In 2023, she collaborated on the “Wanda Czełkowska: Art is Not Rest” exhibition (curator: Matylda Taszycka, Muzeum Susch). She is also the author of a visual essay in the artist’s monograph published by SKIRA/Muzeum Susch in 2023. Most recently, she was involved in conducting in-depth research for the upcoming transhistorical exhibition on artists-women curated by Alison M. Gingeras.

 

Parallel to her research activities, she is a practicing visual artist, working mainly with the medium of photography. Her works can be found in the Museum of Warsaw, Contemporary Photography Collection. She was awarded the City of Warsaw Art Scholarship twice (2016 & 2021). She is one of the founders of the “ID Photos” initiative (Zdjęcia do dokumentów) – a collective founded in early 2022, providing photography services and creative workshops for refugee people in Poland. Since 2023, she has been an active member of the Matki-twórczynie (Mother-artists) collective. As part of her artistic practice, she is currently developing a photography book on the experience of motherhood (working title “Running to the Sun”), scheduled to be published in 2025.
